RESUMO

Continuum beliefs (CB) interventions aim to reduce the stigma of schizophrenia by stating that people with and without schizophrenia exist on one mental health-illness continuum. The current study examines the interrelation between perception of similarities (PoS), CB and desire for social distance (SD) in a German population sample (N = 760). Applying linear regression models: PoS and CB were significantly associated with lower SD explaining about 12% variance and PoS was significantly associated with higher CB. CB partially mediated the relation of PoS and SD. Upcoming mental illness stigma interventions applying CB interventions should also aim to increase PoS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid, the most common autoimmune blistering disease of the skin in adults, is caused by autoantibodies against hemidesmosomal adhesion proteins (BP180/type XVII collagen and BP230), leading into subepidermal blistering. Therefore patients, mostly older than 70 years, show tight bullae and erosions of the skin and rarely at mucous membranes. PROBLEM: Usually the disease shows a chronically relapsing course. Thus there is a need for long-term topical corticosteroids and if necessary systemic immunosuppressives. Still there is no curative treatment available. In the context of a long-term treatment, drug-specific side effects and also a patient's comorbidities have to be taken into account. CONCLUSION: The choice of treatment should be based on disease activity and the extent of the muco-cutaneous manifestations. Dependent on this, high-potent topical class IV corticosteroids are used because of fewer side effects compared to systemic steroids. In case of an intense disease extent or in refractory courses treatment with systemic corticosteroids is usually combined with potentially corticosteroid-sparing immunomodulants such as dapsone or doxycycline or adjuvant immunosuppressives such as azathioprine, mycophenoles or methotrexate. Medium- to long-term an attendant immunosuppressant should be applied to reduce the use of corticosteroids. The CD20-antibody rituximab and high-dose intravenous immunoglobulins are also supplemental off-label options in refractory cases.

RESUMO

In this paper we systematically investigated effect of separator morphology on the performance of Li-S batteries. We tested two kinds of commercially available non-woven fibrous separators made of polypropylene in conjunction with trilayer PP/PE/PP porous separator. Among the non-woven separators, the fibers of the separator of first kind are rough and more acidic than the fibers of the separator of second art, which are smooth. It was found that batteries with smooth separator demonstrate higher Coulombic efficiency, higher charging/discharging capacity and better cycling stability. We attribute better performance of batteries with smooth fibers of separators to lower acidity than that of rough fibers. We believe that negatively charged polysulfides are unable to adsorb on more acidic rough fibers and diffuse readily to lithium electrode. In contrast, polysulfides are able to adsorb on the surface of less acidic smooth fibers that reduces their polysulfides shuttle and rapid decay of battery capacity. Strategic deployment of non-woven Freudenberg and Celgard separator in combination leads to high active mass utilization, superior wettability, reduced short circuit tendency caused by dendritic growth and slower capacity decay.

RESUMO

Soggy-sand electrolytes (solid-liquid composites, typically gel electrolytes, with synergistic electrical properties) are reviewed as far as status and perspectives are concerned. Major emphasis is put on the understanding of the local mechanism as well as the long-range transport along the filler network. The beneficial property spectrum includes enhanced conductivity of one ion type and decreased conductivity of the counter ion, but also the exciting mechanical properties of the solid-liquid composites. Inherent but not insurmountable problems lie in the reproducibility and stationarity of the composites microstructure and morphology. Owing to the huge parameter complexity and hence to the multitude of adjusting screws, there are various strategies for materials optimization. The technological relevance is enormous, in particular for battery electrolytes as here all the above-mentioned electrical and mechanical benefits are welcome. The soggy-sand electrolytes combine high Li(+) conductivity, low anion conductivity and good wettability of electrode particles with the mechanical stability of semi-solids.

RESUMO

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to prepare a nonspreading atomic wave packet. Our technique relies on a spatially modulated absorption constantly chiseling away from an initially broad de Broglie wave. The resulting contraction is balanced by dispersion due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. This quantum evolution results in the formation of a nonspreading wave packet of Gaussian form with a spatially quadratic phase. Experimentally, we confirm these predictions by observing the evolution of the momentum distribution. Moreover, by employing interferometric techniques, we measure the predicted quadratic phase across the wave packet. Nonspreading wave packets of this kind also exist in two space dimensions and we can control their amplitude and phase using optical elements.

RESUMO

Treatment of chronic low back pain exhibiting radicular symptoms poses a clinical problem that has not yet been solved. The technique of percutaneous minimally invasive neurolysis described by Racz is being performed increasingly to treat chronic radiculopathy. A total of 61 patients with corresponding symptomatology after screening for inclusion and exclusion criteria in the region of the lumbar spinal nerve were treated with the Racz catheter technique. Distinct clinical improvement was observed at the 3- and 6-month follow-ups after percutaneous minimally invasive epidural neurolysis. Subjective pain perception, quantified by the McNab score, clearly improved after 3 as well as 6 months. With the exception of partial catheter shearing in two cases and one occurrence of infection, no relevant side effects were noted. The Racz catheter technique for treatment of chronic radiculopathy following disk surgery is suitable with minimal side effects.

RESUMO

Pain affecting the elbow joint may be caused by a number of different pathologies. In principle, these can be grouped by causality criteria into degenerative causes, inflammatory causes, tumor disease, congenital disease and the sequelae of trauma. The majority of these latter are associated with typical clinical symptoms that can be established with the aid of a systematic clinical examination, history-taking, inspection, palpation, an examination of joint mobility, and finally radiography. In this way, the diagnosis can rapidly be established.

RESUMO

A series of 2'-alkylthio-2-(anilinomethyl)imidazolines were prepared to examine the effect of the alkyl group size, sulfur oxidation state, and phenyl ring substitution on ligand binding and agonism of alpha-adrenergic receptor subtypes alpha1a, alpha1b, alpha1d, alpha2a, and alpha2c. Binding at all receptor subtypes decreased for compounds in the sulfone oxidation state as compared to their sulfide analogues. While sulfides were generally potent, nonselective agonists, sulfones exhibited alpha1a subtype selectivity in a cell-based functional assay. Sulfone (32) was 250-7000-fold selective for alpha1a vs all other subtypes.

RESUMO

2-(Anilinomethyl)imidazolines with 2'-esters or 2'-amides are potent agonists of the cloned human alpha(1)-adrenoceptors in vitro. The size and shape of the ortho substituent can have significant effects on the potency, efficacy, and subtype selectivity of these 2-(anilinomethyl)imidazolines. alpha(1A)-subtype selective agonists have been identified.

RESUMO

The Penn State Worry Questionnaire for Children (PSWQ-C) is a 14-item self-report questionnaire that intends to measure the tendency of children to engage in excessive, generalized, and uncontrollable worry (Chorpita et al., Behav. Res. Ther. 35 (1997) 569-581). The current study further examined the reliability and validity of the PSWQ-C in a large sample of 8-12-yr-old children (N = 486). Psychometric evaluation indicates that it is preferable to discard the three reverse scored items from the PSWQ-C when using the measure in this particular age group. The shortened 11-item PSWQ-C turned out to be reliable in terms of internal consistency and correlated meaningful with a scale measuring anxiety disorders symptoms. That is, PSWQ-C scores were significantly associated with all types of anxiety disorders symptoms but in particular with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. Normative data of the PSWQ-C are provided against which scores of individual children in this age range can be compared.

RESUMO

Psychophysiological measures offer objective information for workplace design according to user requirements. They are, however, rarely applied in industrial practice due to weak points from the designer's point of view, such as the differentiation of various superimposed stressors, inter-individual differences, and the effort required for data acquisition and handling. In this study a set of psychophysiological methods was used to analyse bus driver workplaces as a basis for redesign, and afterwards to evaluate design improvements. During inner-city operation bus drivers are exposed to a particular workload situation, especially due to the high density of traffic and bus stops. Their job is characterized by highly frequent and often simultaneous task execution, performed with a compulsory body posture and under exposure to vibration and noise. To reduce the workload related to the equipment and tasks of bus driving, a research project was initiated to design a new driver workplace that meets the specific ergonomic requirements of the drivers. A detailed workload analysis, consisting of a task analysis, a strain analysis derived from ECG measures and an eye movement analysis was performed during public bus driving in different cities and with different drivers and bus types. Although the results have to be considered as somewhat limited owing to the methodological restraints and conditions of a field study, they provided valuable guidance for design. A new concept for the driver cabin was created based on this database. After installation, this design was evaluated by similar psychophysiological measures. Comparison of the pre- and post results indicates that the redesigned work station reduced workload levels.

RESUMO

The effect of the 4-quinolone antimicrobial agent ciprofloxacin on the concentration in plasma and the pharmacokinetics of the immunosuppressive agent cyclosporine was studied in 10 bone marrow transplant recipients. There were no statistically or clinically significant changes in cyclosporine trough concentrations or areas under the concentration-time curve following oral doses of 500 mg of ciprofloxacin every 12 h for 4 days. The data suggest a lack of relevant pharmacokinetic interaction of ciprofloxacin with cyclosporine. There was no indication of an enhanced nephrotoxicity for this drug combination.

RESUMO

One theory of the cause of connective tissue capsule formation around silicone mammary prostheses is based on an immunological interaction. In an in vitro pilot study, it is shown that intraluminal cyclosporine A, a potent T-lymphocyte-specific immunosuppressive agent, can diffuse slowly through the outer shell of a standard double-lumen silicone breast implant. Round silicone tissue expanders containing 50 mg of cyclosporine A were implanted subcutaneously in 10 rats. Ten animals served as controls. Evaluation was performed after three months. A significant decrease in collagen capsular thickness of 21.6 +/- 5.4 microns (mean +/- standard deviation was measured histomorphometrically in the treated group compared with 39.6 +/- 8.6 microns in the control group (p less than 0.001).
